Chariton hurdler signs with Southwestern

CHARITON - Southwestern Director of Cross Country/Track and Field Scott Vicker recently announced the signing of Chariton's Alex Bates for the 2021-22 season.

Bates, who graduated from Chariton High School in May 2021, signed his National Letter of Intent with the Spartans last week.

Bates has been a multi-sport standout for the Chargers, earning three letters in football, one in basketball, four in track and three in baseball. He was a team captain in football and received academic all-conference honors. He received academic all-conference honors in basketball and baseball, as well, and was named Chariton High School's recipient of the Bernie Saggau Award from the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Academically, Bates has earned four academic letters, is a member of National Honor Society and student council, and received the American Citizenship Award.

"Alex is a great all-around young man," Vicker said. "He brings great character to our program, and great passion for his events. I'm excited for him to work with Coach (Jackson) Shantz and improve in the hurdles. Alex is a great addition to our program."

Bates is the son of Abby Bates of Chariton. He will compete in the sprints and hurdles for the Spartans.
