Murray High School outfielder Hailey Chew signed a National Letter of Intent on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, to play softball for the Spartans at Southwestern Community College starting with the fall 2019 semester.

Chew, an all-conference outfielder for the Murray Mustangs, becomes the first signee for Spartan Head Coach Nick Weinmeister's 2019 recruiting class.

According to Weinmeister, Chew is a great example of the type of student-athlete he is looking for to fill his roster.

"Hailey is not only an accomplished softball player, but an all-around athlete and great student," Weinmeister explained. "She will bring game-changing speed to our outfield and hits from the left side of the plate which will bring variance to our lineup."

During high school softball, Chew has been named first team all-conference for the Bluegrass Conference for two years and second team for one year. She has been honorable mention all-state for two years.

During high school, Chew also lettered in volleyball, basketball, and track. She was the Bluegrass Conference champ in long jump in 2018. She has received awards for her academic achievement from the Bluegrass Conference and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. In addition to sports, Chew has been a member of FFA, student council (officer for two years), FNA, and National Honor Society. Outside of school, Chew has served on the Clarke County Organization of Philanthropic Services for five years and was a Clarke County Fair Princess in 2018.

"Hailey comes from a great family and will represent Southwestern well for the next two years and beyond," Weinmeister said. "She will be a great asset for this program."

Chew is the daughter of Monty and Sherri Chew of Murray.
