Spartans sweep Marshalltown

Southwestern plated 30 runs over a two-game home sweep of Marshalltown Community College Tuesday, April 2.

The Spartans took game one by a score of 10-5 after falling behind 3-0 in the first inning and then stormed to a 20-4 win in five innings in the second game of the twinbill.

Ali Enright had a big game one for the Spartans, picking up the win in the pitching circle by throwing a complete game with four strikeouts and only one walk. At the plate, Enright finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, a stolen base and three RBIs. Kaitlyn Schad and Cayla Maitlen tallied two hits apiece, with Schad driving in a pair of runs. Makinna Fitzgerald, Amaya Porch and Lindsay Rader all finished with one RBI apiece.

The Spartans never trailed in the second game of the doubleheader, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after one inning and then plating seven runs in both the second and third innings. Enright had another big game at the dish, going 2-2 with a pair of walks, four runs scored, a home run and three RBIs. Schad finished 1-1 with three walks, four runs scored, a home run and four RBIs.

Amaya Porch, who handled the catching duties in the doubleheader, went 1-3 at the plate with two runs scored, a double and four RBIs. Maitlen finished 3-4 with two runs scored, a triple and three RBIs. Sophomore Klarissa McElroy set the table at the top of the lineup, going 3-3 with a walk, four runs scored and two doubles. Schad, Maitlen and Heather Jessen all had one stolen base.

Kelsey Tibbs picked up the win in the circle, giving up five hits and striking out four with two walks.

Southwestern improved to 4-15 overall with the two wins.
