Creston, IA—Ava Kovarna, a 2A all-state catcher at MVAOCOU High School, signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball for the Spartans of Southwestern Community College during the 2025 softball season.

According to Danny Jensen, Spartan head coach, Kovarna, who plays catcher, is outstanding defensively with a very strong arm, and also is an offensive force with power at the plate.

"Ava has been a leader on her team for the past three years and is an all-stater," said Jensen. "She has been successful in volleyball and golf as well. We look forward to Ava joining our team."

In addition to being named to the 2A Iowa All-State softball team, Kovarna has been a 2A Northwest All-District selection and a first and second team All-Conference selection. She was named second team All-Conference for volleyball, achieving 500 assists, and first team All-Conference for golf. As an honor roll student, she carries a 3.7 grade point average and is a Gold Club member.

Kovarna, who will graduate from MVAOCOU High School in May, is the daughter of Bill & Linda Kovarna of Mapleton. She will start at Southwestern in August 2025 and pursue a degree in elementary education.
