Three Spartans Named ICCAC Athlete of the Week this Spring

Congratulations to Spartan baseball players (pictured above L to R) Manuel Hazoury, Santo Domingo, DR; Ian Torres, Ponce, PR; and Sean Houston, Denison for being named Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Athletes of the Week already this spring!

 

The players' accomplishments are listed below:

Week of Feb. 13-19, 2017, Manuel Hazoury, Baseball Player of the Week
Position:  First base
Year:  Sophomore

Southwestern played their first games back as a DI baseball team since this weekend. In four games versus Northern Oklahoma-Enid, Manuel Hazoury scored two runs and batted-in two more for the Spartans. Through the first four games of the season, Hazoury's batting average is .333 through 12 at-bats, including two 2-for-3 performances and two runs scored.

Week of Feb. 13-19, 2017, Ian Torres, Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Position:  RHP
Year:  Sophomore

Through the first four games of Southwestern's season, the Spartans have used a large rotation of pitchers as 11 different players have seen time on the mound. The brightest spot came from Ian Torres' three innings pitched against Northern Oklahoma-Enid. Torres only allowed one hit and allowed zero earned runs during his time on the mound.

Week of Feb. 27-March 5, 2017, Sean Houston, Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Position:  RHP
Year:  Sophomore

Sean Houston got the start in game 3 at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, pitching 6.1 innings in a no-decision. Houston gave up only two hits and one earned run as the Spartans fell narrowly, 2-1. Despite the team loss, Houston dominated the mound as he also recorded 10 strikeouts. During one stretch between the fifth and seventh innings, Houston struck out six batters in a row.
