The Southwestern Spartan women's golf team traveled to Ankeny to compete in their Regional Championship on Friday, April 28, 2017. The Spartans competed against some stiff competition and almost came up with some national championship qualifiers in the shortened event. The event was shortened to 18 holes with brutal weather conditions taking place all throughout the competition.

Iowa Western Community College took the team title with a score of 321, next was Des Moines Area Community College, Iowa Central Community College, North Iowa Area Community College, and the Spartans. Southeastern didn't field a full team.

With the number of teams in the conference and the way nationals are structured, the top team and the next 10 best individuals all qualify for the national championship which will be held in Southern Georgia in May.

Southwestern's Sydney Goltl (Omaha, NE) and Camryn Somers (Creston) barely missed the trip down south.

"Both Cam and Syd were ready to go on Saturday," said Spartan Head Coach Doug North. "We all thought since we played in the rough weather on Friday, we'd do it again on Saturday. Unfortunately for us, that wasn't the case with colder, windy weather moving in."

Goltl finished in 17th place, which was two strokes out of qualifying, and Somers finished in a tie for 18th, three strokes out of qualifying.

North said, "Sydney had a rough final hole, but she'll be back next year. She is the kind of girl that will use it as a motivator all summer long. Cam, unfortunately, won't be back next year, but she will continue to play for years to come."

The men will compete at Regionals on Saturday and Sunday, May 6 and 7, at Veenker in Ames.

"The guys have a tall mountain to climb," North explained. We've underachieved a bit this spring and haven't played well. We've had a good week of practice and will be ready to go, we've got the ability to stir the pot a little bit."
