CRESTON, Iowa – Southwestern Community College men's basketball battled through a gritty matchup against Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) but ultimately fell short, 79-65, in ICCAC action on Sunday. The loss drops the Spartans to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
The Spartans were within striking distance at halftime, trailing 28-23 after a strong defensive effort. However, a 51-point second half from DMACC proved too much for Southwestern to overcome.
Guard Camory Hall was a standout for the Spartans, leading all scorers with 20 points, including 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc. Kael Jones was a force in the paint, recording a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
"We played great defense in the first half and kept the game close," said head coach Darryl Fletcher. "Unfortunately, we struggled to score consistently in the half court. Progress is being made, and we're confident we'll get to where we need to be."
The Spartans shot 41.5% from the field and 31.6% from three-point range but were outrebounded 45-31, giving DMACC numerous second-chance opportunities.
Southwestern looks to bounce back as they head on the road to face Western Iowa Tech on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
