Golf Earns Elusive Victory

The Southwestern men's golf team got their first tournament victory in 1,270 days, approximately 3 ½ years. This is the third Spartan team victory since Fall 2015, and Southwestern did it by loading the individual leaderboard.

Earning his first tournament victory was Freshman, Stetson McIlravy, which was the 11th solo victory for the Spartans since 2015 and the first since Reinhardt Saunderson's last victory on April 6, 2019. "I'm proud of Stetson," said head coach Doug North. "There were absolutely some shots that he would take back, but overall a great tournament for him and the entire team."

McIlravy finished in a tie for first in shooting a 73, right behind was Robin Persson shooting a 74 and finishing in a tie for third, and rounding out the top five was a solo fifth place finish for Sebastian Camacho with his score of 75. "Having three guys in the top-five at the end of the tournament is exactly where we want to be, says North. Rounding out the Spartans scoring was a solo ninth place finish for Aidan Rooke shooting a 78, and a tie for fourteenth finish with Thomas Esterhuyse shooting an 80.

The Spartans won the eleven-team tournament by 19 strokes over the second place finisher, Waldorf College. All five of the competing Spartans finished in the top-fifteen in the 62-person field.

"Winning is hard in golf, especially college golf." says North. "I've had great teams that never won a tournament, we have only won three since I've started coaching. We will absolutely cherish this, and the guys are pumped, but we are heading into the super-competitive part of our schedule. It is time to buckle down, tighten the dispersions, and stay disciplined."
