Men's Golf Finishes Runner-Up

Smithville, MO - The Southwestern men's golf team followed up their victory from last week in stellar fashion, finishing second place in the Kansas City Cup. After day one, the Spartans had a one shot lead over Rockhurst University and Ottawa University in Kansas.

Rockhurst University shot a stellar 289 in the second round to come away with the team victory. Southwestern finished 21 shots behind shoot a 309-311 and finishing 8 shots ahead of third place, Baker University.

The Spartans had a good showing all-around, said head coach Doug North, "It was good to see the grind out of the guys, especially on Monday (round one). It got windy and hot, and we battled great. These young men performed well against a lot of upper-classmen in this field and we are certainly heading in the right direction."

Leading the way for the Spartans was freshman, Aidan Rooke, who was leading the tournament by one shot after day one and ended up finishing third, one shot out of a tie for first. "Aidan obviously played great," says North. "His driver let him down a bit on day two, but he putted significantly better than our first few competitions, and that was the difference."

Freshman, Robin Persson finished in a tie for sixth, freshman Sebastian Camacho finished tied for 24th, sophomore Thomas Esterhuyse also finished tied for 24th, and freshman Stetson McIlravy finished in 41st.

Southwestern will next compete in the Northwest Iowa Collegiate Showcase in Spencer, Iowa. "The Spencer tournament will be a good gauge for where we are at. We have not seen any regional competition all fall and about half the conference will be there. The goal is to play the course and give full preparation and see what happens."
