Creston, IA – The Southwestern Community College Spartans men's golf team has been awarded the prestigious 2023-24 Academic National Championship by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). This honor recognizes the team for achieving the highest GPA in NJCAA Division II, with an impressive cumulative GPA of 3.472.
Announced by the GCAA in Norman, Oklahoma, the Spartans stood out among 240 schools across six divisions that were acknowledged for their academic excellence. This achievement underscores the dedication and hard work of the student-athletes both on the course and in the classroom.
Coach Doug North expressed his pride and satisfaction, stating, "This was not an email I was expecting to get. We have a goal of a team GPA of a 3.6 each year, and those high expectations are paying off. I'm proud of the guys, they earned it. The bar has been set for future teams, we won't stop with one championship."
The Spartans' accomplishment places them alongside other top academic teams from institutions such as Harvard, Maryville, Kenyon, Keiser, Western Texas, and Virginia Union, who were recognized as Academic National Champions in their respective divisions.
The GCAA, established in 1958, is dedicated to supporting collegiate golf coaches and their teams across the NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA divisions. The association promotes educational opportunities, provides resources, and acknowledges the achievements of its members in both academic and athletic pursuits.
