SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Southwestern Community College Spartans men's golf team secured a tie for third place at the Mustang Derby, hosted by Morningside at Whispering Creek Golf Course on October 7-8, 2024. Competing in a field of 13 teams, the Spartans finished with a two-round total of +32, tying with Iowa Lakes Community College.
The tournament featured a tightly contested leaderboard, with Morningside capturing first place at +19, followed by Jamestown at +22. Southwestern posted a solid first-round score of +12 but struggled slightly in the second round, adding +20 to their total. This performance placed them in the top three, holding off strong challenges from Iowa Central and Iowa Western.
Individually, Freddie Muggeridge and Sofus Lyck led the Spartans with scores of 149 (+5) and 150 (+6), finishing tied for seventh and ninth, respectively, in the player leaderboard. Muggeridge improved with an impressive second-round score of 71, including five straight birdies, while Lyck showed consistency with back-to-back rounds of 75, highlighted by a hole-in-one on hole 17 of the second round. Alexander Cordrey also made a notable contribution, finishing tied for 21st with a total score of 153 (+9).
Head Coach Doug North praised the team's grit: "We are young and resiliant, and that makes days like this fun. We need to start our tournament rounds better and then we will be a force."
The Spartans will look to build on this performance as they head into their next event.
