Ankeny, IA – October 16, 2024 – The Southwestern Community College Spartans golf team put forth a strong showing at the Grand View Invitational, finishing in 5th place among a competitive field of teams. Hosted at the challenging Otter Creek Golf Course, the two-day tournament featured top collegiate programs from across the region, including NAIA and NJCAA contenders.
The Spartans posted a total score of +34, rallying in the second round to improve their position after a tough start. They showcased resilience in the face of challenging conditions, improving their second-round score by 12 strokes. Notably, Nebraska Wesleyan took the overall team victory, finishing at +14.
Leading the Spartans was sophomore Alexander Cordrey, who tied for 8th individually with a solid +4 finish across both rounds. Cordrey's even-par second round was a standout performance, propelling the team into the top five.
Other notable contributors included Elliot Lorentzon, who finished at +7, and Sofus Lyck at +13. Both athletes displayed consistent play, helping to keep the Spartans in contention against strong competition.
"Round one wasn't our best, but we fought," said Head Coach Doug North. "I'm proud of how we came out of the gate on day 2, but even more excited about how we finished. We had a great final six holes, which was opposite on day one."
The team's next event will take place in the spring semester, where they will look to build on this momentum and continue their solid performances as the season progresses.
