Doug North is an exceptional golf coach who has been leading the men's and women's golf programs at Southwestern since June 2015. With a program steeped in history dating back to the late 1960s, North takes great pride in being at the helm of Southwestern's golf teams.

"I'm very thankful to have this opportunity to make a difference at Southwestern," expressed North. "The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference [ICCAC] has a rich history, and a few schools have dominated the golf scene. Each year, we're striving to make an impact and change that trend."

Under North's guidance, the Spartan golf teams have achieved remarkable success, accumulating over 230 victories against opponents in tournaments across Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Florida, Alabama, Arizona, and Nebraska. Notable victories include the 2016 SCC Invitational at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, winning the Simpson College Fall Invitational twice, and most recently, clinching the Graceland Spring Invitational. The Spartan men also set a school-record score of 288 (E) at the North Iowa Area Community College Invitational on September 10, 2018, while the women set a school-record score of 367 (+79) at the same tournament.

Since 2015, North has placed a strong emphasis on academics within the program. A total of 29 golfers have received Second Team Academic All-Conference honors, while an impressive 75 golfers have been recognized with First Team Academic All-Conference honors. Southwestern has produced All-Conference players in 2016, 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023. Additionally, the Spartans have seen their players qualify for the National Junior College Athletic Association's National Championship in 2018, 2019, and 2023.

With a deep-rooted connection to the game of golf, Doug North brings a wealth of experience to his coaching role. He is a proud graduate of Creston High School, where he competed as the number one golfer for several years. Even during his collegiate career, North led the Spartans as their top golfer.

Reflecting on his own playing career, North remarked, "I missed out and didn't continue my own playing career, but I have no regrets. I will work as hard as any of my players to help them compete at the next level if that is what they aspire to achieve."

Coaching Accomplishments (as of May 2023):

  • Coached 10 NJCAA National Championship Qualifiers

He also earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Northwest Missouri State University in April 2011 and an Associate of Arts Degree from Southwestern Community College in December 2008. His educational journey laid a solid foundation for his career in coaching and sports administration. He resides in Creston with his wife, Hannah, and their three children: Sawyer, Corbin, and Willow.
