Spartan track and field adds state champion hurdler, high jumper

Central Decatur senior Cauy Spidle signs his National Letter of Intent to join the Southwestern track and field team for the 2019-20 season.

LEON - Southwestern Head Track and Field Coach Trey Bruton recently announced the addition of Cauy Spidle to the team for the 2019-20 season after Spidle signed his National Letter of Intent with the Spartans.

Spidle is a three-time state champion for the Cardinals, having won state championships in both Class 2A and Class 1A in the shuttle hurdle relay and also in the Class 1A high jump. Spidle recently cleared a new personal best and school record height of 6 feet, 8 1/4 inches in the high jump.

The son of Carl and Tara Spidle of Leon, who will graduate from Central Decatur High School in May 2019, is a six-time state medalist and three-time Drake Relays qualifier. Spidle is a six-time Pride of Iowa Conference champion in track and field and owns the Central Decatur school records in the high jump, shuttle hurdle relay and 4x100 relay. He is also an all-conference basketball player for the Cardinals.

"Cauy is an outstanding student-athlete," Bruton said. "He brings a high level of talent to our track and field program as well as great character and a humble attitude. He has a ton of raw talent and we hope to help him focus that and continue to develop. He will be a leader and a force for us regionally and nationally in the high jump and hurdle events these next two years, and continue on the SWCC tradition of excellence in the high jump event. We are excited he has chosen our program."

Spidle will compete in the 2019 Drake Relays high school boys high jump at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in Des Moines.
