Spartan men win team championship at home meet

The Southwestern men's cross country team won its home meet Saturday in Osceola.

OSCEOLA - The Southwestern men's cross country team brought home the team championship from its home meet Saturday at East Lake Park in Osceola.

Southwestern edged ICCAC rival DMACC by one point, 28-29, for the win.

Sophomore Colin Shreve led the Spartans with his third-place finish in 30:51.37 over the tough 8K course. Skyler Rawlings ran second for the Spartans in fourth place with his time of 31:10.76.

Alex Vandor finished sixth in 31:44.36 and Josh Carstens took seventh in 31:59.55. Austin Lundy rounded out the team scoring for the Spartans with his eighth-place finish in a time of 32:18.36.

"Both the men's and women's teams ran really tough," Southwestern Head Cross Country Coach Trey Bruton said. "Times weren't blazing fast, but that was expected due to the level of difficulty of the course. It really felt like the positive turning point in the season we have been looking for. I expect our athletes are ready to run really fast in the coming weeks."

It was the first time the Spartans have hosted a home meet.

"Hosting a meet gives way to better opportunities for our program for the future," Bruton said. "I am hopeful it will continue to grow into a constant and premier meet on our schedule each year."

Southwestern travels to the University of Arkansas this weekend for the Chile Pepper Festival. The Spartans take the course Saturday morning.
