Spartan Softball Gains DCG Outfielder

Dallas Center-Grimes (DCG) High School softball outfielder Shelby Freestone has committed to the Spartans of Southwestern Community College for 2017-18.

Freestone, who will graduate high school this month, has been a multi-sport athlete at DCG, participating in softball, track, and cross country. In softball, she received the softball coaches award in 2015, softball athletic award in 2015 and 2016, and was named to the Little Hawkeye Conference All-Academic team for softball in 2015 and 2016. She received the cross country coaches award in 2013, the cross country sportsmanship award in 2016, cross country athletic award in 2016, cross country Little Hawkeye Conference All-Academic Team in 2016, and the cross country student-athlete award each year between 2013-16. She was captain of her cross country team in 2016. In addition, Freestone was a Little Hawkeye Conference sportsmanship athlete representative in 2016 and received a wrestling athletic award in 2017.

She has been active in FFA since 2013, a student council member from 2014-17, a National Honor Society member since 2014, and was co-president of the student council this year.

During her time at Southwestern, she will be an arts and sciences college transfer student. She has been selected as a member of the college's student ambassador team as well.

Freestone, of Grimes, is the daughter of Jerry and Sarah Freestone and Misty and Scott Eiteman.
