CRESTON, IA, May 14, 2018—Janesville native Nick Weinmeister is returning to his Iowa roots to lead Southwestern Community College’s softball program.

Weinmeister has been coaching at Northland College in Ashland, WI, since 2014. He started as assistant baseball and men’s basketball coach in February 2014. During the 2014 baseball season, Northland College achieved their highest season win total in college history.

In May 2015, he transitioned to head baseball coach and head women’s golf coach. During his time at Northland College, nine student-athletes were named to the UMAC All-Conference teams and Weinmeister was a part of a coaching team that recruited the largest class of student-athletes (31) in Northland College history.

In addition, he was an assistant coach for the Mankato Moondogs baseball team from 2016-18.

Prior to Northland College, Weinmeister was the head baseball coach at his alma mater, Janesville High School. During the 2013 season, he led his team to the highest season win total in school history. Weinmeister’s teams were back-to-back winners of the Iowa Star Conference North Championships in 2012 and 2013.

Weinmeister said he is looking forward to bringing a revitalized energy and enthusiasm to Southwestern’s softball program.

“My coaching philosophy has always been to maintain a student-athlete centered environment that encourages success socially, in the classroom, and on the field,” Weinmeister explained. “In order for this philosophy to succeed, it will take the recruitment of a strong core of student-athletes from the state of Iowa and beyond.”

Beth Kulow, Southwestern dean of student services, can’t wait for Weinmeister to get to Creston.

“Nick is a great find for Southwestern’s softball program,” Kulow stated. “He is an experienced coach and a personable individual. With his experience, recruiting abilities, and coaching knowledge, I am confident he will provide the leadership and direction we need for Southwestern’s softball program.”

Weinmeister said with it being this late in the recruiting process for next year’s class, he plans to focus his efforts on finding the right fits for the school and his system.

“The overall goal is to evaluate prospective student-athletes who exude strong character traits, athletic talent, and are eager to develop those traits setting them up for future success,” stated Weinmeister. “Being able to build the program back up is a process, but it is one that I am excited about and I feel the players I bring in will have a sense of accomplishment for the role they will play in our success.”

Weinmeister earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in public relations from the University of Northern Iowa and a Master of Science degree in physical education from Southwestern Minnesota State University.

In addition to coaching, Weinmeister will be an advising coach for Southwestern’s TRIO-Student Support Services program.
