Creston, IA—Nick Weinmeister, Southwestern Community College head softball coach, arrived in Creston earlier this summer and immediately hit the ground running with a plan to rebuild the Spartan softball program. A key piece is now in place with the naming of Mallory McArtor, a Kalona native, as his assistant coach.

McArtor comes to Southwestern from the University of Northern Iowa where she is completing her master’s degree in sport and exercise performance psychology. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Coe College in psychology and physical education with an emphasis in fitness development in 2017.

At Coe, McArtor was a letter-winning shortstop all four years of college. Coe is NCAA Division III and a member of the American Rivers (formally IIAC) Conference. McArtor was named all-region her freshman year, was an Easton/NFCA DIII scholar athlete her sophomore year, and earned second team NFCA All-Midwest Region her junior year. She was named first team all-conference her junior year and second team all-conference her senior year.

During her collegiate career, McArtor was not only a player on the field, she was also a coach and mentor to her teammates, as well as softball clinic and camp participants. McArtor enjoyed this role and plans to continue to utilize these traits at Southwestern.

“During college, I had the privilege to learn from great teammates, as well as inspirational coaches, who helped make me the competitive coach and athlete I am today,” McArtor explained. “I plan to bring these same teaching skills and techniques to Southwestern to assist our student-athletes in becoming the best they can be.”

McArtor has played softball her entire life. She is currently a varsity assistant coach at Mid-Prairie High School in Wellman and a player in the Iowa Fastpitch League.

Weinmeister said he is excited about the addition of McArtor to the Spartan softball coaching staff and feels she will be a great fit for the direction the program is headed.

“It became apparent early on that Mallory was the right person for the job because of her playing and coaching experience, but what stood out the most was her desire to help our student-athletes achieve their individual goals both on and off the field,” Weinmeister explained. “I am looking forward to getting this season started and having Mallory on board.”

Southwestern student-athletes will be back on campus soon as the fall semester begins August 22.
