Iowa Central edges out Spartans in Southwestern home shoot

The Southwestern Community College sports shooting team hosted Iowa Central on Saturday, April 6, at the High Lakes Outdoor Alliance Shooting Range in Afton. Iowa Central won the meet 486 to 483.

Iowa Central swept the men’s medals with Kyle Coomer shooting a 99 for first place; Eric Long finishing second with a 97 by winning a shoot-off; and Taylor Nelson placing third with a 97.

Devin Meeks was SWCC’s high in the men’s division with a 95. Blake Binns followed right behind with a 92.

In the women’s division, Southwestern’s Sydney McElfish grabbed the first place medal with a 95. Amanda Gunderson of Iowa Central was second with a 94 and Taylor Anderson of Iowa Central defeated the Spartans' Courtney Nielsen in a shoot-off for third place. Both finished regulation with a 91.

The top five scorers for the Spartans were McElfish–95, Meeks–95, Binns–92, Nielsen–91, and Casey Allen–90.

Spartan Head Coach Marc Roberg was very pleased with his team's shooting.

"This is the second best team score we have shot this year," stated Roberg. "Sydney and Devin have been shooting very well of late and their scores of 95 were all time highs for both of them. Blake and Courtney continue to shoot well, as they have all year. Casey Allen has had some migraine problems that has kept her out of a few meets, but when she can shoot, she always shoots well."

Southwestern’s next shoot is scheduled for Saturday, April 13, at the Turkey Valley Range, near Jackson Junction, against Northeast Iowa Community College.
