Southwestern Community College's sports shooting team competed against Grand View University's JV on Thursday, Sept. 26, at the High Lakes Shooting Range in Afton. Southwestern took the win, 472 to 456.
The top five scorers for the Spartans were:
Tyllar Roesener - 97
Courtney Nielsen - 96
Morgan Pierce - 94
Carter Griffin - 94
Wyatt Baker - 91
For the second straight meet, in the individual placings, Roesener took first place with a 97. This was also the high overall score. Pierce won a three-way shoot-off with Griffin and Ryann Gerner of Grand View University to take second with a 94. Griffin finished third with a 94.
In the women's division, Nielsen took first place with a 96. At this point in the season, Nielsen has won the women's division in three out of the Spartans' four shoots. Makenna Lilly took second, winning a three-way shoot-off with Madison Konrad of Grand View University and Abbie Davis of Grand View University, all with an 89.
Southwestern Head Coach Marc Roberg said his team continues to improve every week.
"We have improved by 23 birds from our first meet, with 472 being our best score to-date," stated Roberg. "This is all due to the work and competitiveness of this group."
Roberg said individually he has a lot of student-athletes making great strides as well.
"Tyllar, Courtney, Morgan, and Carter continue to shoot well each week, and Makenna has been in more shoot-offs during her time at Southwestern than anyone on the team," said Roberg. "She was in three last year, and now already has one this year; and she's won every one of them. She's quite a competitor."
Roberg said he has also been extremely pleased with the improvement of Baker and Dakota Johnson.
"Neither Wyatt nor Dakota had any regulation trap shooting experience before coming to Southwestern this fall," explained Roberg. "They've worked hard in practice on shooting fundamentals and it paid off against Grand View, when Wyatt shot a 91 and Dakota shot an 87."
Roberg said he is proud of the grit of his entire team.
