Southwestern's sports shooting team traveled to the Palo Alto Gun Club at Cylinder to face Iowa Lakes Community College in their first conference shoot of the year on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019. Iowa Lakes and Southwestern both shot a score of 449 to tie. When a tie occurs they move to the sixth shooter's score. Iowa Lakes had an 83 and SWCC had an 80, so Iowa Lakes was declared the winner.

In the individual medals, Courtney Nielsen won the women’s division and had the high overall score of 95. Makenna Lilly shot an 83 to take third in the women’s division. In the men’s division, freshman Carter Griffin shot a 92 to take second and Tyllar Roesener shot a 91 for third place.

The top five scores, which are compiled as the team score, follow:

  • Courtney Nielsen -- 95
  • Carter Griffin – 92
  • Tyllar Roesener – 91
  • Morgan Pierce – 88
  • Makenna Lilly – 83

Spartan Head Coach Marc Roberg said high winds made for tough shooting conditions.

"The fact we tied and then lost on the sixth shooter's score was a good lesson in how important each target is," stated Roberg. "We have a small team and each person’s score plays a role. Even if a student-athlete is having a bad day, the shooter has to keep grinding away, because any score may have to be used.

Roberg said it was a tough way to lose a match, but a good lesson for everyone on the team.

"We will learn from this and get better," Roberg closed.

Southwestern’s next meet is Saturday, Sept. 21, at the High Lakes Outdoor Alliance Range, north of Afton, against Indian Hills. The meet starts at 10 am.
