Spartan sports shooting team performs well at nationals

SWCC sports shooting team at ACUI National Championships

SAN ANTONIO - Southwestern's sports shooting team competed well at the ACUI National Championships last week in San Antonio, Texas, returning to campus with a national championship.

The Spartans won the national championship in sporting clays, while also taking second place for Classic All-American, fourth in super sporting clays, fifth in skeet, and seventh in trap.

Individually, Cole Sorensen took first place Classic All-American in the individual men's class.

"We had very nice weather on Thursday to shoot sporting clays and trap," said Josh Purdy, SWCC head sports shooting coach. "We put up some very good scores in a tough sporting clays course to take the win in our division."

In trap, Sorensen shot 99/100 to tie his personal best, while Logan Eilts (94/100), Gage Skarda (93/100), and Joe Sonntag (89/100) all posted new personal-best scores.

In super sporting clays, Eilts shot 90/100 and Kurtis Noonan shot 85/100 for new personal-best scores.

Purdy commended Sorensen, Nate Wells, Noonan, and Chance Lecy for receiving a gift from the ACUI after helping a young lady from the University of Vermont, whose shotgun failed after the second station in super sporting clay. The Spartan shooters allowed her to use one of their guns to complete the competition.

"They all shot very well with the rain (Friday) and tough courses," Purdy said. "National championships are always a tough shoot with so many very talented shooters from all over the U.S. I'm very proud of this team and their accomplishments!"
