Southwestern Community College has announced coaching changes for the 2020-21 season in its cross country and track and field programs.

Scott Vicker and Trey Bruton will switch roles for the 2020 cross country season. Vicker, who was assistant coach for the 2019 cross country team, will step into the head coaching role this fall. Bruton, who has coached the Spartan cross country program since 2017, will assist Vicker during the upcoming season.

As for the track and field program, Southwestern has begun the process of hiring a new head coach for the 2020-21 season. Bruton was appointed to the head track and field position following a late vacancy in 2018. In addition to coaching at Southwestern, Bruton is a residence hall coordinator in the student housing department and teaches mathematics courses for the college.

The college has contacted new and returning student-athletes on both teams to make them aware of these upcoming changes in the coaching staff. Track and field student-athletes will be kept abreast of the situation throughout the hiring process to ease the transition.

Vicker, a lifetime resident of Creston, has a wealth of high school and collegiate athletic accolades. He was Creston High School’s first two-time Hawkeye 10 Conference cross country champion; a three-time individual state cross country qualifier; a two-time top-15 cross country finisher at state, including earning all-state by finishing 10th as a senior; a four-time state meet medalist in track, including runner-up in the 1,600; Drake Relays medalist in the 3,200; and Creston High School record holder in the 3,200 and 1,600.

During college, Vicker earned a Division I scholarship to Saint Louis University (SLU), competing in the Atlantic 10 Conference. He was a four-year scoring member of SLU’s cross country team and held school records in the indoor distance medley relay, outdoor 4x800 relay, and 3,000-meter steeple chase.
