Southwestern Community College is on the hunt for a new women's basketball coach following the resignation of Head Coach Addae Houston.

Houston, who has been the head coach of the Southwestern Spartans since March 2013, is leaving the college to become assistant women's basketball coach at his alma mater, Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri.

Prior to Houston's arrival at Southwestern, the Spartans were coming off a season of zero wins and 30 losses. Houston knew he had some work to do. He immediately set a goal of establishing a culture to set a standard of tradition and success for the program, not only on the court, but in the classroom and throughout the Creston community. Under Houston's direction, the Spartans most successful season was 2016-17 when they finished 17-15 overall.

Houston's players have boasted individual accomplishments as well.  Nine of Houston's players have been selected to the all-region team and 32 have been selected to the all-academic team in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference.

According to Beth Kulow, Southwestern dean of student services who oversees Southwestern's athletics department, the college appreciates where Houston has taken the women's basketball program.

"Addae has been a guiding force for the Southwestern women's basketball program," Kulow stated. "His direction and continuity have helped the program reestablish itself. We sincerely appreciate his efforts and wish him nothing but the best."

Houston said he will forever be grateful for the opportunity to coach at Southwestern.

"I want to personally thank [Southwestern President] Dr. Crittenden, Dean Kulow, Athletic Director Todd Lorensen, and Assistant Coach Morgan Knorr for their unwavering support," Houston stated.

According to Houston, being the head coach at Southwestern will remain one of the proudest moments in his coaching career.

"The institution, administrative support, loyal fans, and community grow on you from the moment you arrive on campus," commented Houston. "The process of remolding the program to relevance was a tremendous journey, and I truly believe it took everyone at Southwestern to reenergize the women's basketball program, which is what made it so special."

Houston said this experience, along with the friendships created at Southwestern, will be treasured memories forever.

Kulow said the college hopes to have a new head coach in place promptly to assist in providing minimal disruption to the recruiting process and the routines of Southwestern's current student-athletes. The program will also be searching for a new assistant women's basketball coach as Morgan Knorr, who has assisted under Houston for the past two years, announced last week she is leaving her position to pursue other interests. Knorr played for the Spartans from 2012 to 2014.
