Spartan women hold on against Iowa Central

A 29-12 scoring advantage in the third quarter propelled the Southwestern Community College women's basketball team to a 79-74 ICCAC win Monday, Feb. 4, against Iowa Central.

The Spartans held a 14-point lead with 2 minutes remaining in the game before seeing that lead shrink to a one-possession game in the closing seconds of the game. Southwestern was able to make enough free throws to hold on for the win.

Southwestern was led by sophomore Madelyn Moya's 19 points. Moya recorded seven rebounds and shot 7 of 9 from the free throw line in the win. Sophomore Tina Lair-Van Meter recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Vanessa Romo chipped in 11 points with five rebounds. Kayela Willis added nine points and four assists, while Kierra Brice and Simone Jordan each finished with seven points.

The win improves Southwestern to 8-13 overall and 2-7 in ICCAC play, while Iowa Central drops to 12-10 and 3-6. The Spartans next host DMACC at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Student Center gymnasium before finishing off a three-game homestand at 1 p.m. Saturday against Little Priest Tribal College.
