Spartans Move To 2-0 On The Season

The Southwestern Spartan women's basketball team went 2-0 last week to start off their season, both victories occuring on their home floor. Southwestern took a 15-10 lead after a tightly-contested first quarter, and then never looked back, going on to win 82-56. The Spartans had no interest in the game finish being closer than it should be, outscoring Buena Vista by 14 points in the final 10 minutes.

Coach Bryan Austin had this to say about the game on Friday evening, "The ladies did a great job of making adjustments. They realized early on that the game was being called tightly by the officials. It hurt us as we battled foul troubles all night, but also helped us as we shot 33 total free throws."

Southwestern made 25 free throws on the evening, shooting more than 75 percent from the line. Kaylynn Tucker went 11-12 from the line and Alyssa Morris went 8-11, and coincidently, both led Spartan scoring with 24 each.

Tucker had 24 points on the evening, 12 rebounds, 7 steals, and 4 assists. Morris kept right in-step on the young season, scoring 24 points, grabbing 14 rebounds, and netting a steal. Other Spartan scorers were Vernae Ramoth with 10 points, Whynter Waterhouse-Brennan with 9 points, Hannah Smith with 6 points, and Natalia Bochenek with 6 points.

Austin added, "We still have some little things that we need to work on and make adjustments to, but we are also doing some good things that we want to keep capitalizing on."
