Spartans Women’s Basketball Battles in Season Opener Against Southeast Community College

The Southwestern Spartans Women's Basketball team kicked off their 2024-2025 season on the road with a hard-fought battle, ultimately falling to Southeast Community College 71-62. Despite the loss, Head Coach Kori Zarzutzki praised the team's tenacity, especially in the second half, as the Spartans outscored their opponents in both the third and fourth quarters.

Leading the Spartans, Sophomore Brooklyn Hadl had a double-double displaying strong offensive and defensive skills with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 steals. Sophomore Gabby Dwanyen added 18 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 steals, while sophomore Sharmaine Tapling contributed 16 points, including three three-pointers, along with three assists. The team collectively impressed from the free-throw line, making 19 out of 25 attempts, and won the rebound battle, showing their potential for a competitive season.

Coach Zarzutzki highlighted the promising signs from her squad: "Our team fought hard, and we felt that we got better as the game went on. With it being our opener, we are encouraged by what our team showed and are looking forward to continued improvement moving forward. There is a lot to build on!"

The Spartans will return to Creston for their home opener against Graceland University JV on November 5 at 5:30 p.m., where they'll look to bring their momentum and determination back to Spartan Nation.
