The Southwestern Spartans women's basketball team put forth a valiant effort against the nation's second-ranked Johnson County Community College Cavaliers on Tuesday evening. Despite the final score of 72-49 in favor of Johnson County, the Spartans showed significant improvement from their previous matchup against the Cavaliers earlier this month.
Southwestern (1-6) kept the game competitive, particularly in the second half, outscoring Johnson County 17-15 in the third quarter. Sophomore guard Sharmaine Tapling led the way for the Spartans with a game-high 18 points, adding six rebounds and two assists to her performance. Gabby Dwanyen contributed 13 points and eight rebounds, showcasing her ability to compete in the post, while McKenna Wiechman chipped in six points, including two three-pointers.
Johnson County (11-0) relied on their depth and efficiency, shooting 45.2% from the field. Layla Scott paced the Cavaliers with 18 points, draining five three-pointers. Jamya McPherson added 14 points off the bench, providing a spark for the visiting team.
Despite the loss, Southwestern displayed resilience and composure. Their defensive effort forced 11 turnovers, and the team improved their three-point shooting to 35.7%, compared to 18.2% in the prior meeting with Johnson County.
The Spartans will open ICCAC action on Saturday, hosting DMACC in Creston. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM. Fans can catch all the action live on the ICCAC Sports Network.
