Spartan Women’s Basketball Falls to Northeast

The Southwestern Spartans women's basketball team came up short in a competitive battle against Northeast Community College, falling 71-63 on January 8 in Norfolk, NE.

Despite a slow start, the Spartans showed resilience, narrowing an 11-point halftime deficit with a dominant third quarter, outscoring Northeast 20-8. However, turnovers and rebounding struggles in the fourth quarter allowed the Hawks to regain momentum and secure the win.

Sophomore Brooklyn Hadl led the Spartans with an impressive all-around performance, tallying 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals. Gabby Dwanyen added 15 points and a team-high 9 rebounds, while Bhella Lavulavu contributed 11 points and 8 rebounds.

The Spartans showcased efficient shooting, finishing at 40% from the field, 40% from three, and an impressive 83% from the free-throw line (15-18). However, their 27 turnovers and a 48-36 rebounding disadvantage proved to be the difference.

"I am really proud of how we competed tonight," said Head Coach Kori Zarzutzki. "We dug a hole early but fought back and never gave up. I'm encouraged by this effort and looking forward to building on it."
