The Southwestern Community College women's basketball team faced off against the top-ranked Kirkwood Eagles on Saturday afternoon, falling 102-34 at home. With the loss, the Spartans move to 1-16 overall and 0-8 in ICCAC play.
Gabby Dwanyen led Southwestern in scoring and rebounding, finishing with 10 points and six rebounds. Brooklyn Hadl contributed eight points and recorded a game-high four steals, while Kenna Wiechman added six points off the bench.
Kirkwood demonstrated why they're the top team in the nation, utilizing their length and ball pressure to hold the Spartans to just 18.6% shooting from the field. The Eagles dominated on the glass, outrebounding Southwestern 51-20 and converting their second-chance opportunities into points.
"Kirkwood is a tough, well-balanced, and well-coached team," said Southwestern head coach Kori Zarzutzki. "We're flipping the page and focusing on NCMC this Wednesday. We are working each day and focusing on getting better every time we step on the floor."
The Spartans will look to rebound on January 15, when they travel to face North Central Missouri College.
