Spartans Women's Basketball Earns First ICCAC Win in Thrilling Comeback

2024-25 Women's Basketball Team

The Southwestern Spartans women's basketball team (2-17, 1-8 ICCAC) secured a nail-biting 59-58 victory over Iowa Central Community College (5-14, 0-9 ICCAC) on Saturday at Hodges Fieldhouse.

Trailing by seven entering the fourth quarter, the Spartans mounted a resilient comeback fueled by clutch performances from key players. Brooklyn Hadl led the way with a double-double, scoring 17 points—including the game-winning jumper with just 0.5 seconds left—and grabbing 10 rebounds. Gabby Dwanyen also recorded a double-double with 15 points and a season-high 17 rebounds, seven of which were on the offensive glass.

Olivia Heartwell and McKenna Wiechman each added nine points, with Wiechman leading the defensive charge with six steals. Heartwell delivered a crucial assist to Hadl on the go-ahead basket, while Dwanyen sealed the game with a steal on Iowa Central's final possession.

Head coach Kori Zarzutzki praised the team's grit, stating, "I am so proud of our team's fight this game! They were tough. We came from behind and never gave up. The defensive intensity down the stretch gave us opportunities, and the team stepped up and scored on big plays at the end. Everyone played their roles and played together."

The Spartans overcame a halftime deficit and forced 24 turnovers while out-rebounding the Tritons in the second half to complete the comeback.

The team looks to build on this momentum as they prepare for their next conference matchup.
