Heartbreaker at the Buzzer: Spartans Fall to Iowa Central

Creston, IA – The Southwestern Spartans women's basketball team came up just short in a 61-59 loss to Iowa Central on Saturday, as a last-second layup sealed the game for the Tritons.

The Spartans (2-21, 1-12 ICCAC) were led by Sharmaine Tapling, who delivered a career-high 32 points, knocking down six three-pointers and adding six steals. Brooklyn Hadl contributed 17 points and was instrumental in the game's closing moments, driving to the basket for a potential game-winner before her shot was blocked. Olivia Heartwell facilitated the offense with eight assists, while Dalanie Auffert pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Southwestern started hot, jumping out to an 18-11 first-quarter lead behind strong ball movement and shot-making. However, Iowa Central capitalized on second-chance opportunities and a 34.6% performance from beyond the arc to stay in the game. The Spartans had opportunities to extend their lead but struggled at the free-throw line, shooting just 12-of-22 (54.5%).

Despite battling injuries and a short rotation, the Spartans continued to fight, but rebounding proved costly as they were outrebounded 40-33. Head Coach Kori Zarzutzki remained optimistic about the team's effort.

"Our team started out really hot and moved the ball well," Zarzutzki said. "We worked hard and had many opportunities, but fatigue settled in, and we left a lot of points out there with missed free throws and layups. We are battling through injuries and limited numbers, but we're still finding ways to compete."

The Spartans will look to bounce back in their next ICCAC matchup as they continue to push forward in conference play.
