Spartans Fall to No. 1 Kirkwood, Prepare for Sophomore Night

Facing the top-ranked team in the nation, the Spartans battled but fell to Kirkwood Community College, 105-59, on Wednesday night. Despite the result, Southwestern showed improvement from their first matchup against the undefeated Eagles.

Sharmaine Tapling led the Spartans with 22 points, knocking down two three-pointers and going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Brooklyn Hadl added 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Gabby Dwanyen nearly posted a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Spartans capitalized on their trips to the free-throw line, shooting an efficient 80% (20-for-25). However, Kirkwood dominated the glass, more than doubling Southwestern's rebounding total (54-26) and using second-chance opportunities to extend their lead. The Spartans also forced 17 Kirkwood turnovers but struggled with 22 of their own.

With the season winding down, Southwestern (2-24, 1-15 ICCAC) will return home for their final home game of the year on Wednesday, Feb. 26, for Sophomore Night. Come support the Spartans as they take the court one last time this season.
