HOBBS, N.M. - Southwestern freshman Elenani Tinai broke five school records and earned All-American honors in the heptathlon during the NJCAA Track and Field Championships at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, New Mexico, May 16-18.

Tinai finished fifth in the heptathlon with a new Southwestern school record 4,279 points. Tinai entered the final event of the heptathlon - the 800 meters - in sixth place. But, the Spartan freshman from Fiji ran nearly 30 seconds faster in the 800 than Iowa Western's Sierra Coward to vault Coward and into fifth place.

In the process of finishing fifth, Tinai also broke school records in the javelin (29.79 meters), 100 meter hurdles (15.72 meters) and the 200 meter dash (25.18). She won the women's heptathlon 200 meter dash.

Tinai, who also qualified individually in the long jump, finished 13th with a new school-record leap of 5.59 meters. Teammate Remie Haynes finished 13th in the heptathlon with 2,832 points.

On the men's side, the 4x800 relay team of Alex Vandor, Eric Portis, Evan Ouverson and Phillip Selmer finished 12th overall in a new school-record time of 8:08.12.

Benjamin Aliel finished 24th in the 400 meter dash with his time of 49.11. Alex Vandor ran 1:59.81 in the 800 meters for 20th place. Shane Breheny took 26th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 11:31.34. Southwestern's 4x400 relay team finished 14th in 3:19.39.
