Creston's Cayla Maitlen signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball at Southwestern Community College for their fall 2018 run.

Maitlen was one of four Iowa student-athletes to join the 2018 Spartan recruiting class last week. Fellow signees included Ali Enright of Seymour, Jentri Hullinger of Leon, and Payton Jellison of Seymour. These four will play under the direction of first-year coach Casey Quiggle, who arrived at Southwestern in February.

Slated to graduate in May, Maitlen has excelled as a student-athlete in high school. Playing volleyball all four years of high school, she received Hawkeye 10 volleyball honors for two years and was her team's captain for two years. In addition to volleyball, Maitlen competed in basketball for four years, track for four years, and softball for five years. At this point in her high school career, she is a two-time state qualifier for softball and three-time state qualifier for track.

Maitlen is a member of the National Honor Society and has been on the honor roll all four years of high school. She earned all-academic honors in the Hawkeye 10 Conference.

At Southwestern, Maitlen will be in the arts and sciences college transfer program with the goal of one day being a physician's assistant.

She is the daughter of Steve and Sue Maitlen of Creston.
