Spartans Volleyball Falls to Southeastern Blackhawks in Straight Sets

Creston, IA—In a challenging matchup on September 4, 2024, the Southwestern Community College Spartans were overpowered by Southeastern Community College, falling in three straight sets (7-25, 11-25, 9-25). The Spartans faced an aggressive Blackhawks offense, leading to a tough night for Southwestern.

Middle blocker Whitney Hollins (#22) stood out as a key performer, leading the Spartans with 9 total points, 4 kills, and contributing to the team's blocking efforts. Outside hitter and defensive specialist Emily Strait (#11) also made her mark, recording 15 digs—nearly half of the team's total—and adding 4 kills.

Despite these individual efforts, Southeastern's relentless attack, led by standout McKenna Marlow (#10), who tallied 16 points and 13 kills, proved too much for Southwestern to overcome. The Blackhawks' defensive presence was also strong, with 12 digs from Taryn Stephens (#9) limiting Southwestern's offensive attempts.

Southwestern's attack percentage struggled throughout the match, with a team hitting percentage of .172. Meanwhile, Southeastern maintained control with a .256 team hitting percentage, particularly excelling in the first and third sets with percentages above .340.

The Spartans will look to regroup as they head to the Marshalltown Tournament this Friday, September 6, where they will face St. Cloud Community College and Highland Community College. Despite this setback, the team remains focused and prepared to improve as they continue their season.
