Spartans Go 2-0 in Marshalltown, Coach Maitlen Earns First Career Wins

The Southwestern Spartans Volleyball team had a successful outing on September 6, 2024, going 2-0 at the Marshalltown Community College tri-match. The Spartans secured a 3-0 sweep over Fort Scott Community College, followed by a hard-fought 3-1 victory against Olive-Harvey College. These wins mark Head Coach Brianna Maitlen's first victories with the program.

Match 1: Southwestern 3, Fort Scott 0
The Spartans opened the day with a decisive sweep of Fort Scott Community College, winning 27-25, 25-20, and 25-21. Whitney Hollins led the charge with 12 kills and four blocks, while setter Cadence Perkins contributed 32 assists. Defensively, Emily Strait stood out with six digs, anchoring a solid team effort.

Coach Maitlen expressed her pride in the team's effort, stating, "The players showed great determination, especially in that first set. I'm proud of their composure and execution in critical moments. This win is a great step forward for our program."

Match 2: Southwestern 3, Olive-Harvey 1
In their second match, Southwestern rebounded after dropping the first set 23-25 to Olive-Harvey College. They responded in dominant fashion, winning the next three sets 25-10, 27-25, and 25-18. Hollins once again led the Spartans with 13 kills and eight blocks. Perkins dished out 20 assists, while Ruby Hernandez Clavell was a standout on defense.

Coach Maitlen noted the team's growing chemistry, saying, "We're starting to get into a rhythm. The players are connecting better on the court, and it's showing in our results. It's great to see the hard work pay off."
