Creston, IA — October 1, 2024 — The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Spartans Volleyball team faced a tough slate of matches this past weekend, ultimately splitting their four contests with a 2-2 record. The Spartans demonstrated resilience and determination as they battled against tough competition.

Friday, September 27 — Loss to William Penn JV (0-3)

The weekend began with a difficult matchup against William Penn JV at home. Despite a spirited effort, the Spartans fell in straight sets (18-25, 22-25, 18-25). Key performers included sophomore outside hitter Whitney Hollins, who led with 10 kills and a .474 hitting percentage, and setter Cadence Perkins, who contributed 15 assists and 3 kills with an impressive .600 hitting percentage. Despite their individual efforts, the team was unable to overcome the offensive power of William Penn JV.

Sunday, September 29 — Loss to Graceland University (0-3)

The Spartans returned to action on Sunday morning at Graceland University but suffered another setback, dropping the match in three sets (26-28, 21-25, 20-25). The match was marked by close sets, but the Spartans couldn't find the edge needed to secure the win. Hollins once again led the team with 16 kills, while Danica Chamberlain made an impact with 12 kills and a .370 hitting percentage. Perkins displayed her playmaking abilities with 35 assists. Defensive efforts were highlighted by libero Emily Strait, who tallied 20 digs.

Sunday, September 29 — Victory Over Graceland University JV (3-0)

Later that day, the Spartans bounced back with a commanding 3-0 win against Graceland University JV (25-22, 25-22, 25-23). Hollins dominated the attack, registering 14 kills with an outstanding .737 hitting percentage. Perkins continued her excellent play with 23 assists and 3 service aces, while Skyelar Lawal added 5 kills and a service ace. The Spartans' defense was anchored by Strait's 14 digs, helping secure their first win of the weekend.

Sunday, September 29 — Five-Set Thriller Against Ottawa University (3-2)

The Spartans closed the weekend with an exhilarating five-set victory against Ottawa University (21-25, 25-22, 15-25, 25-15, 15-12). Hollins delivered a stellar performance with a season-high 22 kills, supported by Lawal's 17 kills and 3 blocks. The match was a true team effort, as Perkins distributed 49 assists, and Strait led the defense with 31 digs. The Spartans showcased their resilience, coming from behind twice to claim the match in the decisive fifth set.
