Spartan women compete at home meet

Spartans Cross Country Classic

OSCEOLA - The Southwestern women's cross country team placed second at its home meet Saturday in East Lake Park.

The Spartans scored 38 points behind DMACC's 17 points at the Spartan Classic.

Sophomore Hannah Thompson led the Spartans with her seventh-place finish in 27:27.64 over the 5K course. Danielle Costain also earned a top-10 medal with her time of 28:47.10 for 10th place.

Elenani Tinai (14th) ran 34:27.17, Tori Reynolds (15th) 34:33.58 and Fane Sauvakacolo (16th) 36:53.15 to round out the scoring for the Spartans.

"Both the men's and women's teams ran really tough," Southwestern Head Cross Country Coach Trey Bruton said. "Times weren't blazing fast, but that was expected due to the level of difficulty of the course. It really felt like the positive turning point in the season we have been looking for. I expect our athletes are ready to run really fast in the coming weeks."

It was the first time the Spartans have hosted a home meet.

"Hosting a meet gives way to better opportunities for our program for the future," Bruton said. "I am hopeful it will continue to grow into a constant and premier meet on our schedule each year."
