FORT DODGE - Southwestern sophomore Mazzy Hummel finished her career Tuesday at the NJCAA Half Marathon Championships.

Hummel completed the 13.1-mile course that weaved its way through Fort Dodge and finished at Kennedy Park outside of Fort Dodge in 2:07:46.10 to finish 33rd. Hummel's time ranks her third all-time in Southwestern history for the half marathon.

"I can't begin to describe how proud I am of Mazzy for this effort," Southwestern Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Scott Vicker said. "Mazzy decided two weeks before the race that she wanted to give it a try. She ran this race off of just 5K training, with a few long runs added in during the two weeks leading up to the race. For her to complete the race without any true half marathon training is a testament to her toughness."

Temperatures in the 20s and 30s throughout the race made for tough conditions for the competitors, with several dropping out along the way. The course featured almost all of its elevation gain in the final 5 miles.

"Mazzy hadn't been over 8 miles on a training run going into the race, and the final 5 miles of the course were the toughest," Vicker said. "I know she hit a bit of a wall late, but she never gave up and kept going the whole way. I am glad Mazzy was willing to give this race a try and, most importantly, I'm glad she had fun while she running it. It was a great way for her to end her career at Southwestern."
