The Southwestern Spartans baseball team concluded a four-game series against Coffeyville Community College with a mix of results. The series, held on February 9th and 10th, 2024, showcased the Spartans' resilience and determination on the diamond.

Game 1:

In the series opener, the Spartans faced a tough challenge against Coffeyville CC, ultimately falling short with a final score of 0-3. Despite a strong pitching effort from Ben Amador, who pitched 4 innings and allowed only 1 earned run while tallying 3 strikeouts, the Spartans couldn't overcome Coffeyville's defense.

Game 2:

Game two saw a more spirited performance from the Spartans, who battled hard and got victory number one of the season with a final score of 6-3. Standout performances included Chris Lugo's offensive prowess with a homerun and 3 RBIs, and Jaxon Brooks contributing 2 RBIs.

Game 3:

Kicking off day two, the Spartans fell to Coffeyville in a 7-4 game. Key performances included Drew Miller's offensive contribution with a crucial RBI, and Brysen Vernon's two RBIs. Pitcher Weston Barber delivered an impressive performance, throwing 5 innings and allowing only 1 earned run while striking out 3 batters.

Game 4:

In the final game of the series, the Spartans put up a valiant effort but fell short with a narrow 2-3 loss. Despite the loss, the Spartans showcased their resilience, with Jacob Angell and Aidan Eklund each contributing an RBI.

Reflecting on the series, Coach Chris Piperno commented, "Any time you start the season it's a great opportunity to test your process. Where are you at mentally? What do you need to do to get better? Each week is another opportunity to enhance the process. Each game this weekend was an opportunity for our team to grow and improve. We faced some tough competition, but I'm excited to keep moving forward this season."
