Southwestern Spartan freshman Reinhardt Saunderson, led the Spartans in the first-ever Southwestern Spartan Invitational on Friday, Sept. 22, defending his turf; however the Spartans came up a little short as a team.

"We had the course playing tough, maybe not as tough as scores indicated, but Crestmoor showed its teeth," said Spartan Head Coach Doug North.

Two Spartans shot below 80 and placed in the top five, but couldn't quite pull the Spartans to the team win they were looking for to defend their home course.

"Congrats to Southeastern, as they had four scores in the top-10, to beat us by two strokes," said North. "We were confident, but left a few strokes out there. They played well on a course none of them had ever seen before."

The Southwestern men shot a 323 and the Southeastern Blackhawks won it with a 321. Saunderson brought home the individual title and a one-stroke victory with a round of 77.

The Spartan women were led by Sydney Goltl, sophomore, and her tie for a sixth place finish. The women failed to defend their home turf as a powerful Southeastern Blackhawk team took the individual victory by eight strokes and the team title by 21 strokes.

"Only having four girls makes it rough," commented North. "If somebody has a rough day, that score will count. We continue to improve and that is the goal!"

This was the first collegiate-level golfing event that Southwestern and Crestmoor have hosted.
