Spartans Knock Off Hills

In the nightcap of the "Day of RED OUT Basketball in Creston," the Southwestern men picked up a 102-91 win over NJCAA Division I 19th ranked Indian Hills on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017.  The win moved the NJCAA DII second-ranked Spartans to a perfect 16-0 heading into ICCAC play this weekend.

Jamil Maddred led the way with 21 points and nine rebounds; Jordan Johnson added 18 points; Brodric Thomas ended at 17; and Calvin Chambers had 16.

"We had multiple guys step up and make plays on both ends of the floor," said Spartan Head Coach Todd Lorensen. "Brodric had 17 points but he also secured three huge loose balls for us.  Those are the winning plays I value."

Southwestern got off to a quick start with an 8-0 lead and scored 35 points in the first ten minutes of the game before slowing down to take a 47-41 lead into halftime.  During that stretch, both Thomas and Johnson were sidelined for long stretches due to foul trouble.

"We prefer them on the floor and not on the bench but our guys stepped up to make plays during that time," added Lorensen.

The Spartans never trailed in the game but Indian Hills did make multiple runs to tighten the game.  After a basket cut the lead to 63-62, Khallid Edwards drained a three-pointer and after a defensive stop, Maddred nailed one of his four threes to push the lead to 69-62.  With just over five minutes to go, the Warriors fought back again cutting the margin to two at 85-83 but again Southwestern had an answer going on a run of its own.  Down the stretch, Chambers stepped up and knocked down four straight free throws to secure the victory.

"We had a great crowd and environment" commented Lorensen.  "It was a fun game to be a part of and I'm proud of our guys."

Southwestern is back in action on Saturday, January 14, when Kirkwood visits Creston for a women's and men's doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.
