Spartan Men Win on Sophomore Day

Southwestern won a key ICCAC matchup 86-68 over Iowa Lakes on Saturday, Feb. 27, as the team honored their sophomores who moved to 52-7 over the past two years, and 25-1 at home.  The win moved their overall record to 27-1 and their ICCAC record to 9-1.

Kirkwood, also at the top of the conference, lost on the road to drop to 8-2 in ICCAC play, leaving the Spartans alone atop the standings with two games to go.  In addition to a one game lead, the Spartans own the tie breaker with Kirkwood, meaning one win this week, with just two games remaining in the season, will secure the top seed in the regional tournament.

Lavon Hightower, reigning ICCAC player of the week, had a big night with 19 points and four rebounds which included three-of-three from downtown. Sophomore KeShawn Wilson added 16 points, six rebounds, and two steals, while Jordan Johnson scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds.  Jamil Maddred stuffed the box score with nine points, nine rebounds, and five assists.  Brodric Thomas battled foul trouble but hit three triples for nine points.

"It's a great luxury to have the depth we have," said Spartan Head Coach Todd Lorensen.  "Each night it seems different guys step up, which has been a huge key for us."

Southwestern is currently ranked #2 in NJCAA Division II.  The top-ranked team lost this week which could move the Spartans back to the top spot which they held for four weeks earlier in the year. The Spartans travel to Iowa Central on Wednesday and then to NIACC on Saturday before returning to Creston for the Quarterfinals of ICCAC play on March 7.
