2020-21 Southwestern track and field team

The Southwestern Community College track and field program placed seven student-athletes on the NJCAA Track and Field Coaches Association's Scholar All-America team, which was announced this month.

In addition, the Spartan men's track and field team received the Academic All-Scholar Team recognition, ranking eighth in the NJCAA with a 3.437 team GPA.

Individuals who posted a GPA of 3.4 or better in the Spring 2021 semester received Scholar All-America honors. Southwestern was represented by Reuben Cooper (3.79) of Nassau, Bahamas; Levi Detrick (3.63) of Shenandoah; Benjamin Aliel (3.60) of  Papua New Guinea; Justin Cunningham (3.57) of Nassau, Bahamas; Nyle Buchanan (3.54) of King George, Virginia; and Connor Eaton (3.44) of Mount Ayr. Fane Sauvakacolo, the lone female on the Southwestern track and field team in 2021, also earned Scholar All-America honors, posting a GPA of 3.71 during the spring semester.

"We accomplished a lot of great things as a team this spring, but this is easily the achievement I'm most proud of," Director of Cross Country/Track and Field Scott Vicker said. "The spring semester was not easy for these student-athletes, who had to go through COVID testing regularly in order to be able to compete. For these student-athletes to be as successful in the classroom as they were on the track given the challenging semester took a lot of dedication on their part. I am incredibly proud of our team."
