2 records fall as Spartans prepare for Region XI Championships

The Southwestern Community College track and field program capped off a busy weekend of competition Saturday with a new school record and national-qualifying mark.

Spartan sophomore Roland Hure of Papua New Guinea shattered his own school record in the long jump, and easily sailed past the national qualifying standard of 7.03 meters, with a leap of 7.09 meters on his first attempt Saturday morning at the Bearcat Invitational. Moments later, Hure bettered that mark with a jump of 7.10 meters. His previous best jump indoors was 6.83 during the 2019-20 season. Hure's mark of 7.10 meters was 5 cm short of matching the Papua New Guinea indoor track and field national record in the event.

Hure's jump was the second school record of the indoor season for the Spartans. Freshman Molly Venteicher of Massena posted the best mark in school history in the women's weight throw in the first meet of the season in January at the Northwest Open. Venteicher's throw was 12.87 meters. In two competitions since then, she has hovered around that same distance. Venteicher also ranks second in school history in the women's shot put with her best mark of 11.57 meters, which she did Saturday at the Bearcat Invite.

The Spartans competed at three different meets this past weekend, their final weekend of competition in preparation for the Region XI Championships at Buena Vista University Feb. 18-19.

Southwestern student-athletes set 10 new PRs Friday at the Concordia Classic in Seward, Neb. Also on Friday, Hure and sophomore Justin Cunningham traveled to University of Nebraska to compete in the 60 meter dash. Field event athletes competed Saturday at the Bearcat Invite.

So far this indoor season, the Spartans have posted 16 additions to the program's indoor track and field all-time top 15 performance lists. On the men's side, the Spartans have 13 additions to the program's all-time top 15 performance lists.

Highlights include freshman Grace Massier at fifth in both the 200 meters and 400 meters, freshman Brianna Osterson fourth in the 60 meter hurdles, fifth in the long jump, and sixth in the high jump; sophomore Florence Omodayo second in the triple jump, fourth in the long jump, and seventh in the high jump; and freshman Emma Decker seventh in the shot put. For the men, Cunningham posted the second-best 60 meter dash time in program history and freshman Robert Norton is sixth in the 800 meters. The Spartans have placed four in the top 15 of the mile in program history, with Clayton Stafford ninth, Jon McCall 11th, Norton 13th, and Nicholas Mather 15th.
