Spartans End Southern Trip With Another Victory

The Spartan softball team concluded their Southern trip. Southwestern went 3-0-1 on the weekend with the final game ending in a tie due to time constraints with the field and the next games.

The first game on Saturday was against North Arkansas College and the Spartans came away with an 8-4 victory. Head coach, Nick Weinmeister had this to say on the game one performance: "We came in expecting a battle after the result the night before and we got one. The pitcher we faced did a nice job of mixing speeds and it took us a while to get going offensively. It was great to see us come back from behind for the first time this season and close it out once we gained the lead."

The Spartans had 10 hits in the victory, scoring 8 runs. Offensively, the Spartans were led by a homerun by Sophomore Ali Enright. Six other Spartans got hits in the game. Freshman, Thayda Houser, led the way on the mound for the Spartans giving up just 4 runs defensively.

Game two on the day ended in unceonventional fashion, a 10-10 tie. Due to scheduling limitations, the field being used had another game scheduled, so the game ended due to a time limit.

After digging a 5-1 hole, the Spartans rattled off 7 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead, only to give up 5 runs in the top of the sixth and end the game with a 10-10 tie. "Similar start for us as game one where offensively we didn't get much going and fell behind early. Being down 5-1 at one point in the game, it was nice to see our offense finally get going and put up a big inning. Unfortunately we had a poor inning defensively in the top of the 6th that ended up costing us a victory and although we finished with a tie which doesn't happen often, it was a great weekend overall finishing 3-0-1,"said coach Weinmeister.

Sophomore pitcher, Jenna Parfeniuk, pitched the majority of the game for the Spartans. Southwestern was led offensively by Freshman, Grace Cotton with two homeruns and Brylee Kemper went 3 for 4 with a single, a double, and a triple.
