Spartan Sports Shooting Team Travels to Ottumwa for Weekend Shoot

The Southwestern Community College sports shooting team traveled to Ottumwa on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, for a conference shoot hosted by Indian Hills Community College. Eight teams competed during the day-long event. 

Southwestern shot a 466, good enough to tie Simpson College for fifth place overall.

During the shoot, only the top five scores count toward the team score. The top five scores for the Spartans were:

  • Tom Steinbach, Creston —96
  • Hunter Albers, Indianola —94
  • Dakota Burgmaier, Creston —93
  • Blake Binns, Winterset —92
  • Jessica Aupperle, Wiota —91

Individually, for the Southwestern men, the placings and scores were as follows:

  • Tom Steinbach, Creston, 10th place (tie) - 96
  • Hunter Albers, Indianola, 21st place (tie) - 94
  • Dakota Burgmaier, Creston, 28th place (tie) - 93
  • Blake Binns, Winterset, 30th place - 92
  • Kyle Redinbaugh, Atlantic, 38th place - 90             
  • Dillon Glenn, Bethany, MO, 40th  - place - 89
  • Kessler Tomas, Creston, was tied for 40th place - 89
  • Gabriel Gard, Murray, 50th place - 86
  • Dalton Smith, Prole, 62nd place - 76
  • Thane Simmons, Murray, was 63rd place - 74
  • Quentin Siefkas, Peru, 67th place - 33

Individually, for the Spartan women, the placings and scores were as follows:

  • Jessica Aupperle, Wiota, 8th place (tie) - 91
  • Sydney McElfish, Greenfield, 21st place - 76
  • Mallory Bell was 23rd place - 73
  • Makayla Flora, Adel, 25th place - 59

Southwestern Head Coach Marc Roberg said the Spartans continue to improve with every shoot, but now plans to challenge his student-athletes to work on shooting more consistent.

"We had several people with really good scores going, but then they dropped several targets on one house," Roberg explained. "We need to work on our consistency.  If we get that, we will be right up there."

The Spartans next outing is a home shoot this Saturday, Oct. 7, at the High Lakes Outdoor Alliance in Afton.
