Spartans Finish Several in Top Three

Propelled by gusty winds on a cloudless Saturday, the Southwestern Spartan Track & Field teams saw numerous top three placings at the Warrior Invitational hosted by Waldorf University. For the men, Freshman Tyrell Paul (Ajax, ON, Canada) won the men's 100m dash with a personal best time of 10.96, and the 400m dash in 49.69. Paul also teamed with Mustapha Moore (Kennesaw, GA), Mat Hopkins (Bloomfield), and Seth Starks (Springfield, NE) to win the 4 x 100m relay. Sophomore Keegan Longabaugh (Corning) won the shot put in 11.92m, the discus in 36.36m, and took second in the hammer throw with a toss of 28.90m. Moore  placed second in the long jump in 5.88m, and freshman Nate Hoyt (Shenandoah) earned third in the 5,000m run in 17:43.

The women experienced success as well, with Sisillia Seavula (Fiji) collecting titles in the 100m (12.39), 200m (26.56), and a second in the 400m dash (1:00.97). Shiomi Kuwabara (Tokyo, Japan) won the 5,000m in a season best time of 23:43.43. The women's 4 x 100m relay of Rachel Flickenger, Kylie Bidrowski, Reagan Smith, and Sabrina Fountain earned second in a time of 55.54. Fountain (Raytown, MO) earned third in the 200m dash in 30.05.

"When we schedule meets, we always like to balance the big invitational with smaller meets where times cease to matter, and it's all about beating the person ahead of you. Today, we faced good competition in Waldorf University, which is an emerging program in the NAIA, and North Iowa Area Community College, who is consistently a top-tier team in the ICCAC. Our students competed well in all event groups, and we accomplished a lot of work."

The Spartans will return to the track this Friday for the Viking Classic at Grand View University. The meet will be held at Williams Stadium in Des Moines, IA. Follow Spartan Track & Field on Twitter at @SWCC_Track_XC for updates.
