Spartans Take Sixth at 2016 Region XI Championships

The Southwestern track & field teams competed at the Region XI Championships this past weekend held on the campus of Iowa Western Community College.  In a field with three top twenty five programs in the NJCAA, both the men and women placed sixth with team scores of twenty two and fourteen points, respectively. 

Highlights for the men included Seth Starks (Springfield, NE) third place leap of 6'4" in the high jump, Tyrell Paul (Ajax, ON, Canada) placing fourth in the 400m dash and eighth in the 200m dash with times of 49.15 and 22.04.  Other scoring efforts came from the men's 4 x 100m relay placing fourth, Keegan Longabaugh (Corning) seventh place toss in the javelin of 138'10".

For the women, the 4 x 100m relay team placed third with a time of 51.63. Reagan Smith (Creston) placed fifth in the women's 400m dash with a time of 1:13.01.  Alyssa Proffitt (Afton) placed seventh in the 1500m run with a time of 6:03.46.  Shiomi Kuwabara placed eighth in the 10,000m run with a personal best of 49:56.

 "Coming into this meet, our goal was to improve our team placing from the Indoor Regional Championships," Stated Coach Ekel. "While we did not move up in placing, our competitiveness was much improved across the board."

Starks, Paul, and Sisillia Seavula will represent Southwestern Community College at the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships which will be hosted by South Plains College in Levelland, TX.  The meet will be contested from Tuesday, May 16 through Thursday, May 19th.
